Navigating support: healing after pregnancy and infant loss
Published in March of Dimes on October 30, 2024
Losing a baby is an experience no family ever expects to face. The emotional journey that follows is complex and can feel very isolating. But it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Support is available, and healing is possible.
The emotional weight of grief and understanding trauma
Grief after experiencing pregnancy or infant loss is overwhelming, and can often show up unexpectedly – like hearing a name you had in mind for your baby or walking past the nursery at home. A range of emotions can flood in, including sadness, anger, guilt, and confusion. There’s no timeline for grief, and no “right” way to move through it. Allowing yourself to experience these feelings, no matter how painful, is essential to healing. In addition to grief, many parents face lasting emotional trauma, replaying events (also called flashbacks) and trying to understand the “why”. This can lead to anxiety and depression, complicating the healing process.
Recognizing this trauma and seeking help can provide the space to process emotional pain. It won’t erase the grief, but it can offer tools to cope and regain a sense of control over managing emotions.
Finding community and support
Reaching out for support during difficult times can be life-changing. This may include speaking with someone who can offer comfort and connecting with professionals:
Helplines: Postpartum Support International’s (PSI) Helpline (1-800-944-4773) and the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline (1-833-852-6262), provide confidential support to new and expecting parents.
Support groups and community: Connecting with others with lived experience can provide comfort and validation. PSI offers free virtual support groups for parents experiencing loss. You can also join closed Facebook groups for March of Dimes or PSI to find support and advice.
Therapy: Connecting with a mental health professional specializing in grief can help you navigate your emotions. Use PSI’s Provider Directory to find a provider in your area.
Asking for help isn’t always easy but it is a necessary step in coping with the pain of loss. Healing doesn’t mean forgetting; it’s about honoring your baby’s memory while caring for yourself. Embracing this journey is an empowering opportunity to understand your feelings and build resilience. You deserve all the support you need.
