The sleep prescription for new moms

Sleep is health. Let’s make it a right, not a privilege | 2 min read

“Sleep when the baby sleeps."

Add that to the list of things NOT to say to a new mom.

I love Molly Dickens idea of a ‘sleep prescription’ for new moms. Sleep isn't optional—it’s core for mental health and well-being.

I’ve been there. With baby #2, sleep deprivation stretched way longer than with my first. And it hit me HARD.

Moms need more than well-meaning advice. They need real, sustainable solutions for this next-level exhaustion:

🌟 Paid leave: So moms aren’t expected to function when their baby is still up every 3 hours.
🌟 Childcare: Because sometimes, a nap is the best thing a mom can do for her baby.
🌟 Mental health support: To help moms set boundaries and ask for help.
🌟 Doulas, sleep consultants, and real tools: So moms don’t have to figure out baby sleep on their own.
🌟 A better narrative: One that lets moms make choices that are right for THEM, without guilt (feeding, division of labor, etc).

Sleep is health. Let's make it a right, not a privilege.

Instead of “sleep when the baby sleeps”, let’s give moms the tools and care to make that happen.
